Evaluation of Music Magazine

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I have learnt from doing my music magazine is that, there are many different factors that you must take under consideration when planning and making the magazine.  I had to use photo shop to bring all the elements of my magazine together. At first I found photo shop hard to work and it did get quite annoying when it didn't do the simple task that I wanted it to. In the end I have found it easier because I know how to use the tools and how to get the desired effect that I was looking for. When working on photo shop, you can't just click on one button and it will do what you want. I found that you have to click a few different buttons to get it to do what you want.  Then when it came to making my music magazine I decided that I needed to figure out how to use photo shop. So I got help from my family, teachers and I looked on the Internet for tutorials. Another technology that I had to work with was a camera. This was because I had to do a photo shoot for my double page spread. From my own photo experience, you can't just go in and take some photos and it will be done. I had to plan what I wanted and then I still had to make some changes to them with the use of photo shop again. From my photo shoot I got about 50 photos of my model and then I only used about 7 of them in my magazine, with the exception on one which I decided to take on another date.

How did you attract your audience?

A magazine is there to get you to read it, so if a magazine front cover does not catch your attention then it won't sell. I think that I attracted my audience by the use of different fonts on my front cover. I think that having different fronts make the font cover look more interesting and exciting. I have about 6 different fonts on my front cover. All my cover lines are also in different sizes. This is there to show more important parts of a magazine

Who would be the audience for your media product?

I think that the audience for my magazine will be teenagers, but my magazine is mainly aimed at people who like pop music but I feel like I have included different things from all genres of music. This is because I have include chart updates from all types of genres, articles on different artists that don't just stick to pop music. I think that the music that is in the charts does not have a specific genre so I feel like that is kind of what my magazine is like.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and Why?

I think that I might use IPC Media because they are quite a well known publishing company. Compared to Future PLC who has quite a few music magazines, IPC seems like the best idea. Future PLC may have a few music magazines but they all revolve around guitars and that is something that won’t come in to my magazine very often.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

I think that my magazine represents young, teenagers, who are interested in music and what is going on in the charts. I think that my magazine dose that because I listened to the results from my questionnaire about what should go in my magazine and they said that they wanted charts. So I feel like I have included that because I have a chart update on the contents page and if you look on that page there is a section for a whole page all about the charts.

In what ways does your media product challenge forms and conventions of real magazine products?

I think that my magazine challenges forms and conventions of real magazine products because real magazine company's will use top designers for their layouts and real photographers for their photo shoots. I only had my self when it came to planning and producing my magazine. Also I think that real music magazines just stick to the same things and the same genres, but in feel like my music magazine tries to produce something for everyone, I have chart updates for all genres.

What have I learnt in terms of progression from my collage magazine to the full product?

Between the making of my collage magazine and my music magazine I have learnt that a lot more work goes into making a decent looking music magazine. My collage magazine didn't take that long to make but when it came to making my music magazine, it took me a long time to decide what I wanted and how it was going to look.  When I Made my collage magazine I did use photo shop but only slightly, I didn't really use different tools mainly because I didn't know how to use them.  I have defiantly made progress with how I work and how I use photo shop. I know how that photo shop need to have time taken on it if you want a good out come. Also I learnt from collage magazine that I need to do more planning and research and that is what I think I did when it came to making my music magazine.

Changes…as a consequence of feedback

From the information and comments that I got from audience feedback, I have made a few changes to my contents page and my double page spread.

When I asked my target market what they thought of my contents page they said that it was well structured but they thought that I needed to add in some more headings in because there was a bit of a gap on the right hand side of the page. So I have added in ‘events’ and ‘extras’ as new headings. This not only takes way the empty space on my page it also adds in more things for my reader to look at. They are then getting more for their money. On the contents page I have made the headings and information a little bit smaller so that I could fit ‘events’ and ‘extras’ in. I have now finally added in the page numbers onto my contents page, this is so when people look through my magazine they can find the page that they want to look at.

When I asked my target market what they thought of my double page spread they said that my article is well written but I needed to check my spelling before I could be finished. So that is what I did, I have checked the spelling within the article and I did find a few mistakes but I have corrected them. There was also the comment that I should make the little pictures oh Hannah a bit bigger so I have slightly increased them because I think if I make them any bigger then I won’t be able to fit many on the page.

The whole magazine
The comments that I got for my magazine as a whole were really good. My target market said that they like that I kept the same colours throughout my magazine so I have defiantly not changes that part. They also said that my magazine was well laid out and easy to follow, which is important because if people can’t find or read things in my magazine then they might not buy it.

Audience feedback – whole magazine

Questionnaire for my magazine as a whole.
1. What is your favourite part of my magazine?
2. What don’t you like about my magazine?
3. Is there anything that does not match with the rest of my magazine?
4. What changes would you make on each page?
5. Rate out of 10

I have asked 10 people what they think of my magazine as a whole.

David said: “I think that my favourite part of this magazine is the contents page because it is well structured, informative and it is easy to read. I think that the double page spread could be spaced out a bit better. I think that everything hangs together and there is nothing that looks out of place. I would just add in a few more images.
Rate: 8/10
Lesley said: “My favourite part of your magazine would be that everything it well spaced out and it is not too crowded. I think that the whole magazine goes together really well because you have kept the same colours. I would just add in more things on the contents page.

Julie said: “I think that the magazine as a whole is very good, all the pages look really professional. I like everything. I think that all the pages go together and look like they are from the same magazine.
Rate: 9.5/10
Charlotte said: “I like the colours that you have used in your magazine. I like that you have used lots of photos. I think that you need some more things on the contents page. I think that all the pages match and go together. I would just add a few more bits to your contents page.
Rate: 8.5/10
Faith said: “The magazine is laid out really well and it is easy to understand what is written on a page. I think that your article is really informative and interesting. I do think that you need to add in a few more stories or parts to your magazine. I think from looking at it that all the pages go together and it defiantly looks like something that I would pick up off a shelf in a shop. I would only change the part about adding things to the contents page.
Rate: 9.5/10
Harry said: “I think that all the cover lines and article lines are easy to read especially the ones on the cover which you have changed. I also like the pictures down the middle of the double page spread. That makes the article more interesting to look at. I just think that those pictures could be a smidge bit bigger. I think that all the pages go well together and you are always reminded what magazine you are reading because the name is always there and the colours are the same on each page. I would only change the size of some of the article lines on the contents page.
Rate: 8/10
Millie said: “I like that you have changes the size of the fonts on the cover and I think that the article is very well written and I found it really interesting when I read it, so that is a good point. I think that having a QR code at the bottom of the double page spread is a really good and different idea. It is keeping up with modern technology, which I think is a good thing. I don’t really not like anything of this magazine. I think that because you have used the same colours on each page it helps tie them together. I think that I would just make sure that all the spelling is correct.
Rate: 9/10
Samantha said: “I think that you have a good magazine so far because you have kept the same colour scheme on all the pages. I don’t think that you have checked your spelling so if you did that then it would make it better. That would be the main change that I would do to finish off your magazine.

Colin said: “I think that it is good that you listened to the advice we gave about your front cover and you have changed things and I think it has made it look better. The contents page is really well laid out but there is a bit of a gap so I think that, that needs to be changed. I like all the different pictures on the double page article and I think that the article is really interesting. I feel like I have learnt a lot about Hannah and what she is planning on doing. I don’t think that your spelling is perfect at some points in your magazine but that can be easily resolved. Everything goes together because you have kept the same colours which is a good thing. I think you just need to do final checks before you can be officially finished.

Fi said: “Like I said last time about your front cover I think that it is good that you have kept the same colours and that the cover lines are not in the same font. I am glad that you have not changed that. I think that it is good that you have made the cover lines bigger. I like the layout of the contents and double page spread. It is easy to follow and to read. I would just change the size of the pictures in some places

Double Page Spread Article

In this blog post, I am going to show you the contents of my the article for my double page spread.
Hannah maybe the freshest face on the pop scene but shufflin has an exclusive interview with this new artist. Less than a year ago she was just a normal girl now she is on her way to the top. It looks like 2012 is going to be a big year for Hannah
Hannah, what has the last year been like for you?
It has been a bit of a roller coaster ride to be honest because I was just singing in pubs and small concerts in my home town now I’m in London recording my new single.
It must be exciting?
Yes, it is very exciting but it is also very nerve racking because you never know if people going to buy the single.
Can you explain to us a bit about your new single?

Well, it is based on some of my songs that I used to write in my room back home. So this song really connects with me. It is about trying to be strong after a break up but I hope the listener can still hear the sadness to the story as well.
Wow, sounds like you have been through heart break. Do you think that helps you create better songs?

Yes I have had my fair share of heart break but I have used song writing to get across my feeling when I feel like I can’t say them.
Do you think people will be able to relate to you?

I hope so; I mean I really did come out of nowhere. I live in a small village in the North of England so nothing really happens up there. I hope that people can relate to the songs that I sing because they are about things that normal people go through all the time.
What do your family and friends think of the new you?
They are all really proud of me for what I have achieved so far. I don’t think my friends can really believe that I have been in a studio and I’m recording my own songs that they have heard me singing in my room.
What does your mother think about all this?

Emm, she is really supportive of what i want to do and she has always told me to try my best and that's all I can do. So I think if i give this my best shot then she will be proud of me no matter what.
Some people change when they get in to the public eye. Have you changed or are you planning to?

I personally don’t think that I have changed in the way that i write music or the way I preform either, some people might think that I have but the most important thing to me is what my family think of me. As long as you stick to where you come from and as long as I am happy in what I am doing then I can’t go wrong.
Good for you. Do you have any one that you look up to in the music industry or back home?Growing up I used to listen to Michael Jackson and quite a few 80’s songs because that was what my family listened to. As I got older I wanted to be like Beyonce or Madonna. I also look up to my mother, I come from quite a big family and she was an amazing cook and always did what was right for her family. She was not one to sit around, she wanted to be doing something with her children.
Your Mother sounds like a amazing woman. Did she inspire any of your songs?

There is one song that I wrote quite a few years ago about her. It was me talking about her as if she was not there anymore and what I would do with out her.
Sounds like it is an emotional song with deep meaning for you. Do you think that that song would go on your album?

I’m not sure yet we are in the early stages of my album but I would love for it to be there for people to listen to. My mother and I are very close and it is a song that reflects that and I think that lots of people have the same relationships  with their mothers.
You said before about that you look up to Beyonce and Madonna. What is it about those artists that you like so much?

Well Beyonce started her career very young and had been around for a long time, as has Madonna. So I have grown up listening to their music trying to sing along with them my room. Madonna has changed her style so many times and has come back to the pop scene again and again. She does not let her age get in the way of making music. Beyonce has an amazing voice with such a range to it; it seems effortless for her to belt out one of her classics. She shows me that women do run the world and she is music’s woman in charge.
Is there any artist in particular that you would like to work with?

There are so many amazing artists out there but it would be amazing to work with someone like Beyonce, Madonna. I also really like Bruno Mars’s songs so it would be cool if we could work together, but I think that might not happen or in the very distant future. I need to become a bit better known first.
We are sure that you will get to duet with them. What does the 2012 hold for you?

Thank you, well I am hoping that my new single is a success and that I get to create an album to go along with it. So there is going to be a lot of song writing in the next few months. My manager is trying to see if he can get me in to Leeds Fest or other festivals.
Leeds Fest, what would that mean to you?

It would be a very important moment for me, getting my music out there. I think I will be very excited if I did get to do it.
Have you had to sacrifice anything to get where you are now?

No I would not say that, my manager is very understanding of the type of music that I want to make and produce.
Sounds like you are going to have an amazing year and we wish you well.

Production of my double page spread

In this post I am going to show you a step-by-step guide on how I made my double page spread for my music  magazine.
1st: I began by making my background the same colour as Hannah's dress them it fades into white. After that I added in another picture of Hannah in a different position.
2nd: I have added in a white box which will hold the main article. Then I added in the first part of my article in to the white box.
3rd: I have added in the second part of my article into the white box on the right hand side of the double page spread.
4th: I have added my final section of my article to the  white box on my double page spread.
5th: Now that I have all my article on my double page spread, I decided to add "Britain's newest star". This is there to grab the readers attention.
6th: I have added in a little box in the bottom right corner of the page. This is there to show the reader that there is more things for them to read and watch on the shufflin website.
7th: I have added in a QR code to the bottom of the page. This is there to get peoples attention because if they scan this code then they will be able to get a free download of Hannah's new single straight to their mobile.
8th: I have added in another title to the top of the page. This is just there to remind the reader what magazine they are reading.
9th: I have now added in lots of different pictures of Hannah to the side of the main article. I did this because it gets rid of the gap between the article and the big picture of Hannah.
10th: The final thing that I have added to my front cover is the  quote from the main article. This is just there to catch the audiences attention.

Journalism/interview research

I have done some research into have I should interview someone, ready for when I interview ‘Hannah’ for my double page spread.

I have learnt from http://www.badlanguage.net/how-to-interview-someone that the best way to interview someone is to shut up and listen to that the interviewee is saying.
Introduce yourself at the start of every interview. Tell them who you are, your relationship to the publication that you are writing for and what the article will be about.
The interviewer needs to be themselves; this is because each person has their own interview style. The best interviews are the ones where you find common ground with the person you’re interviewing.
1. Be enthusiastic. People like people who like them. They are also conditioned to think of an ‘interview’ as a potentially hostile situation and be on their guard. Consequently, you should be upbeat and positive. Do this genuinely if you can.
Sometimes the interviewer needs to shut up. You should be talking about 10-20% of the time at most.
2. Listen hard. Sometimes you can pick up a word or a phrase in an answer which you can play back to the interviewee and get something much more intimate, interesting or honest. 3. Interviews aren’t scripted Q&As, they are intense professional conversations and you need to concentrate.
4. Don’t lose control. Sometimes, especially with self-important interviewees, you can get into a bit of a tug-of-war over who is in charge of the interview. Never forget that you are the CEO of the interview. You don’t have to be bossy but it’s important that you get what you need from the interview and you steer it in the direction you want to go.
5. Focus on what you need. Sometimes people get absorbed in details. Sometimes you need a specific quote or a good story.
6. Respect the interviewee’s privacy.
7. Be courteous. Say thank you afterwards. If you can provide a copy of the final article, do so.

Music magazine double page spread

In this post I am going to be showing you the mock up of the contents page for my music magazine.
For my double page spread I have decided to separate the writing from the pictures
On the far left hand side of my double page spread I have a big photo of Hannah. This is so the reader gets to see another side of her.
I have also added ‘Brittan’s newest rising stat’ to the tip of the page above where the article is going to be.
Then to the right of the page there is going to be a white box and that is where the main article is going to be.
In the white box I am going to have a question and answer type of interview.
Finally in the bottom of the page I am going to have a little picture of Hannah and in that box it will tell the reader to go to the magazine’s website for more information on the article.
